Zoom H2 Handy Portable Stereo Recorder Review

I wanted to buy the best portable recorder on the market today on a budget which is why I ended up with the Zoom H2 Handy Portable Recorder.

The fact of the matter is the Zoom H2 is bursting with features and is excellent value for money. You can pick one one up from Amazon for less than $200 which is an absolute steal in today's economic condition.

That's NOT the best thing that I love it about it. The "ease of use" is the thing I love about it. Watch the video below to see how easy it is to use.

Some of the Features I love about the Zoom H2

The Zoom H2 is packed with features, way too many to go through here. I'll just go over some of my favorite features below:

  • Record 360° sound so if you want to record the whole band its no problem at all for the Zoom H2.
  • The unit is light and will easily fit into your pocket so you can take it anywhere with out hassle and the 2 AA bateries will give you up to 4 hours of recording time! Perfect for the band rehearsal or Podcast!
  • 1 button recording. Push the RED button in the middle twice and you're recording. That EASY!
  • And loads more...

Somebody Say Accessories?

One of the outstanding things I love about the Zoom H2 is just how much comes standard in the box. You get:

  • Earbuds
  • 1/8 Inch Stereo to RCA cable
  • Mic Clip Adapter
  • Tripod Stand
  • USB Cable
  • AC Adapter
  • 512MB SD card.

And to top it all off you can also buy:

  • Silicone Protective Jacket
  • Hard Cover
  • Numerous Size SD cards
  • And many many more...

Whats not to love about the Zoom H2?

Okay, what about the not so great stuff then? Well, to be fair I have to say if you want the best quality recordings around the Zoom H2 is just not the one. Are there better recorders on the market? Yes, Do they cost way more? Definitely.

Another issue I have with the unit is no on-board speaker, so if want to check a recording you have to use the headphones. This isn't so bad because taking a set of headphones with you is easy.

Like I said before, for the price and features you get with the Zoom h2, you won't find a better Portable Recorder on the Market.

Word On The Street

The Zoom H2 has been around for a while and with good reason. Its works and is an amazing little unit. Currently over at Amazon the Zoom H2 has 468 REVIEWS! and has an average rating of 4.5 out 5!

Some of the reviews:

  • "As good as the Edirol R-09 for about half the price!"
  • "Much better and easier to operate than the Zoom H4"
  • "Dream Come True"
  • "Point-and-Record Simplicity"
  • "Beat my expectation"

I've recently purchased the H2 and started reading the manual. I intend to use for original song sampling and quartet rehearsals. I can't find it in manual (or in any review), a "safe expected distance" a singer should sdtand away from the mic. is it approx. 3 ft, or something else? I know you'll need to check the H2 rec. levels but I want a safe spot to start. Thanks for your help in a reply.

Hi John, there is no "safe" spot to start as each person sings at a different volume and can also sing at various levels during a performance. I would caution on the lower side with the limiter on.

If you record too loud you've ruined the recording but you can always fix a quiet recording.

I know it sounds like a vague answer but play around with it some more. You will figure it out in a few goes. Thats how easy the Zoom H2 is to work out.

Really Achillefs? It should be a matter of just connecting up to your Mac and going into your system pref and selecting the H2 in your sound section. Maybe download the new drivers or upgrade the firmware. Grab them from the Samson website.
